The Wind-Slicing GT Puts Ford Back in the Supercar Game
Released on 05/12/2017
[Man] Hear the word supercar and you probably think
Ferrari, Lamborghini, maybe McLaren,
now add Ford to the list.
(engine revving)
This wind slicing hyperbeast is the 2017 Ford GT.
It's the spiritual successor to the GT40
which stunned Europe in the 1960s by winning
the 24 hours of Le Mans Endurance Race four years in a row.
To mark the 50th anniversary of that domination
Ford revived the car, developing two new versions.
The racing version already won its class
at last summers Le Mans and now the street legal GT
is hitting the road.
Naturally the Detroit engineers packed both
with about half a century of tech advancement.
And while purist may be sad to see a turbo charged V6
take the place of the old honking big V8
this engine does its job and then some.
It makes more than 600 horsepower
rocketing the carbon fiber in the aluminum supercar
all the way to 216 miles an hour.
Still the new GT prize is simplicit.
Lots of supercars do most of the driving work for you
but the Ford demands real skill on the corners.
But when you hit just the right combination
of steering, throttle and brake
you feel like you really belong on the track in Le Mans.
Of course your chances of ever getting to try it
for yourself sits somewhere between zilch and zero.
Not only does Ford want about half a million bucks
for the GT, that's the starting price,
it demands you fill out an application
explaining why you deserve to cough up the cash.
Oh, and it's making just a thousand copies of the car.
So yeah, don't expect to drive the GT anytime soon.
Whatever.
Just be glad Ford's back in the supercar game
and that it's winning.
