Elon Musk’s Boring Company Plans to Dig a Tunnel to Dodger Stadium
Released on 08/16/2018
[Narrator] Are two dimensional traffic jams
getting you down?
Well Elon Musk has a plan to save you.
Tunnels, networks of them called The Loop,
lacing under cities making use of the third dimension
to move more people faster.
Now the Tesla and space expert says he wants to get real
and build a tunnel in LA to relieve traffic
on baseball game or concert nights.
The Dugout Loop as it will be called should
take less than four minutes to transport fans
between one of three possible subway stations
in the East L.A. area, under Sunset Blvd.
To Dodger Stadium.
No small feat in infamous L.A. traffic.
Just a few passengers will be able to book seats
in advance in one of these skates.
The whole thing is really a proof of concept.
The zero emission emission high speed electric shuttles
will be something like these concepts.
It will be based on a Tesla Model X and carry between
eight and 16 people,
and travel at up to 150 miles an hour.
While this new tunnel is shortened, service limited,
the eventual plan is for a mesh of tunnels under a city
with stops like Dodger Stadium being just one option.
Musk says he can build more cheaply and faster
than extending the existing subway
without using public funds.
L.A.'s Metro has agreed to partner with the Boring Company
but hasn't given any more details.
So far The Boring Company's built just one short tunnel
under Space X property in Hawthorne near L.A.
You can tell from some of the videos it's released though
that's it's been doing plenty of experimenting.
It has two tunneling machines
which it's constantly trying to speed up.
We've seen his people towing muck cars
with his electric cars.
And the demonstration of an elevator
swallowing up a brand new Model S,
which, again, is an eventual proposal for the system.
Car drivers might be able to travel through it
in their own vehicles.
The company is even making bricks
from the muck that's hauled out
with plans to sell them to finance construction costs.
The Boring Company's other big project
is the Chicago Express Loop to link O'Hare Airport
with downtown.
That's a much bigger proposition,
two tunnels will be needed for a two way transit
with large stations at both ends.
The project also needs Federal approval.
In L.A. getting to Dodger Stadium is notoriously difficult,
even leading Larry from Curb Your Enthusiasm,
pick up a prostitute so he could use the carpool lane.
To tell you the truth, what I'd really like to do
is I wanna go to Dodger Stadium,
and I wanna go to the game
and I'll pay you for your time.
[Narrator] Right now,
there are no real public transit links.
But there's another proposal to use the third dimension,
height.
A gondola from Union Station which would carry passengers
over the traffic.
If it gets through an environmental review,
which could take months or years,
The Boring Company says tunneling will take 14 months max,
and hopefully a lot less.
Elon Musk will then have at least one passenger
carrying tunnel under his belt,
and fans may finally be able to get to the game
without missing the first pitch.
