First trailer for 'X-Files' 2016 return is mysterious (and familiar)

Now the first trailer for the new mini-series (or as we call six episode runs in the UK, 'series') has been released, and it seems that the show is retaining its conspiracy-minded flavour but dragging itself screaming into the modern world. "They police us, spy on us, tell us that makes us safer," says a voice over in the trailer. "We've never been in more danger," Mulder replies.

The trailer is essentially 100-percent classic X-Files, with flashlights, dimly-lit warehouses and confused looks in front of government buildings, mixed with what appears to be a lengthy flashback to the scene of a Mysterious Event sometime around the 1950s.

What exactly the show will entail when it arrives next year remains to be seen, but if you're hoping to a return to form after 2008's The X-Files: I Want To Believe movie sequel, you're probably in safe hands judging by this clip.

The series returns on Sunday 24 January in the US. A UK broadcaster has not yet been announced.
