Watch Solar Impulse 2 soar over the Statue of Liberty

The 14th leg of the flight lasted five hours from Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania to NYC

Solar Impulse 2 (Si2) has completed the 14th leg of its attempt to fly around the world using nothing but solar energy. The landing, at New York's JFK airport, came after weather delayed the trip from the mid-US and before the upcoming flight across the Atlantic.

As the Si2 flew over New York City, its pilot André Borschberg took amazing footage of the Statue of Liberty and the city's iconic skyline.

The flight lasted just over five hours from Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania to New York City, and touched down at JFK at 7:59AM on June 11.

In a blog post, the team said: "We have now finished the crossing of the United States of America, finally landing at bustling JFK, in New York City. This flight marks the completion of a huge milestone in our journey around the world with Solar Impulse 2.

"Ending it with the flight over the Statue of Liberty is symbolic for Solar Impulse as the statue serves to welcome travellers to the country."

The team was not able to host a public visit of the plane - as it did during previous landings - because JFK is too busy.

The Monaco Mission Control Centre has now started looking for a clear weather window to cross the Atlantic. The team has not yet decided where the plane will land, but it will be somewhere between Ireland and Morocco, destinations include Ireland, France, Portugal, Spain, and Morocco.

The plane weighs little more than a car, but has the wingspan of a Boeing 747.

It left Abu Dhabi in March 2015 and is being flown on its 22,000-mile (35,000km) round-the-world journey by Swiss entrepreneur Andre Borschberg and psychiatrist Bertrand Piccard.

The journey has previously included a five-night and five-day journey from Japan to Hawaii, which broke a record for the longest uninterrupted journey in aviation history.

After it crosses the Atlantic, it will then fly through Europe and on to the Middle East back to Abu Dhabi.

The aircraft is powered thanks to 17,000 solar cells, and it runs on battery power during the night.
