Around 2 AM BST on Monday morning, the Earth's shadow passed directly in front of the Lunar disc, turning it a rich shade of crimson.

Meanwhile the Moon was also at its closest point to Earth, known as the perigee, in which our largest natural satellite can appear up to 14 percent larger than normal.

Across social media users posted images -- some good, some not -- of the moment that the Moon turned blood red.

The term "supermoon" was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, who defined it as "a new or full Moon which occurs with the Moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit (perigee). In short, Earth, Moon and Sun are all in a line, with Moon in its nearest approach to Earth". The term has exploded in popularity recently, though in reality the difference in size is barely visible to the naked eye.

It does make for good photographs, however. Here are WIRED's favourites.
