Gareth Southgate was appointed England manager in November 2016, following a successful spell in charge on an interim basis. The former defender amassed almost 650 appearances across an 18-year playing career with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough. During this period, he earned 57 caps for the Three Lions and represented his country at two World Cups and two European Championships, including the semi-finals of Euro 96. Sussex-raised Southgate stepped into management with Middlesbrough in the Premier League between 2006 and 2009. He originally joined The FA as head of elite development in January 2011 and played a key role in the opening of St. George’s Park over an 18-month period before being appointed U21 head coach in August 2013.
In his current role, Southgate has guided England to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup,a third-place finish in the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019, and most recently to the final of Euro 2020.
Alex Rutter is the Director of Retail Grocery, CPG and Travel Sectors at Google Cloud. He is responsible for shaping the UK & Ireland strategy and helping clients across the wider retail sector continue on their accelerated digital journeys. A member of the senior leadership team at Google Cloud, Alex is also the executive sponsor of the Google Cloud Women in Technology. He is a regular speaker at industry events and executive roundtables, often leading discussions on DEI, culture and the future of work.
Alex lives in London with his family and, when he is not working, participates in the Beyond Barriers Professional Mentoring program.
Chris has extensive experience running large, global engineering and technology teams across multiple market sectors, primarily in digital information and analytics organisations, building highly distributed SaaS solutions. Starting his career as a software developer, he has spent time in Switzerland working as a part of a start-up incubator for Thomson Reuters, led engineering teams at Elsevier in the academic research business, and most recently taken on the Group CIO role at Kingfisher Plc, where he’s focused on evolving and transforming the technology organisation.
