Adam Savage explains his scary hand injury

*He's a stunt man and special FX guy as well as a Maker, so his numerous stitches are part of the career. However, what he's saying here is true – in the shop, it's hard to stay mindful and easy to get overconfident.

*A lot of Makers come out of the digital world and they're too blithe about heavy machinery. I'm by no means a steady Maker guy, but I've got some hand-scars: from some lab equipment, from some furniture repair, even from a too-tight kite-string, of all the seemingly innocent and playful things.

*It's also kind of good that Adam's hay fever is acting up here – he looks more the mortal being than the FX guru, and flesh is mortal, really. Around power machinery, it's especially mortal. Life isn't risk-free, but you can reduce it. Also, "when all you've got is a hammer, sometimes you're gonna mash your thumb."
