The corona virus and its consequences also affected the HeK (House of Electronic Arts Basel). The team was in the midst of setting up the new exhibition Swiss Media Art: knowbotiq, Alan Bogana and Félicien Goguey - Pax Art Awards 2019, which we had to break off for given reasons. While exhibitions and events are postponed, we will continue our activities online with a varied program. We have been thinking about how we can still stay in touch with our community and give you an insight into our current work.
In the coming weeks we would also like to give you more insight into our collection with its focus on software and net-based art and present it with personal statements by our staff. Among these activities, HeK Net Works invites artists with a specific net-based practice to present their work on our website and social networks. The programming club for children and young people, the BitFabrik, will also be coming to your home in March and April with offers that can be followed online. And we are working with international partner institutions and are participating in the online exhibition We=Link: Ten Easy Pieces, Et cetera, which was initiated by the Chronus Art Center (CAC) in Shanghai to stay connected and find inspiration through art.
So stay in touch with us and follow our online program through our website and social media!
HeK Collection online
Monica Studer / Christoph van den Berg, Passage Park #7: Relocate, 2017
We will use the time of closing to bring newly purchased works from our collection online. Every week we present artists and their works from the personal perspective of our staff. As an institution with a national mission, we are concerned with questions of preserving digital art and culture and are building up a collection of media art that is unique in Switzerland. The focus of our collection is on "born-digital-art", i.e. art that was created and is located in the digital medium and often no longer has a physical manifestation.
Discover the works of our collection online in the coming weeks!

HeK Net Works
Olia Lialina, Best Effort Network (2015/2020). This work is part of the artist's solo exhibition currently on view at arebyte Gallery, London. It is also on view in the stairwell of HeK.
As an institution dedicated to digital culture and the new art forms of the information age, net-based art has been part of HeK’s program since its origin. The current situation is an opportunity to show and support this exciting art practice once again. In April, artists are invited every week to occupy HeK’s digital space in the way that best resonates to their individual work. For example, artists can provide personal stories on our social networks, or a series of thematically related pictures and videos, or create original works in the form of animations and GIFs.
We are aware that the closing of museums worldwide further weakens the already precarious situation of artists who don’t have a regular income, and it is our intention to contribute to their activities while our exhibitions are being postponed. With this initiative we intend to support the work of artists who create original net-based projects. The artists featured in the HeK Net Works programme are invited by HeK and are selected in reason of their outstanding artistic practices.
Make sure to stay connected with us and follow our online program through our website and social media!

Special online exhibition:
We=Link: Ten Easy Pieces, Et cetera
Due to the global outbreak of the coronavirus, which is raging rapidly all over the world, we are witnessing an unprecedented historical moment with drastic effects on social life and economic structures. Cultural programming is also massively affected, but more than ever, art remains an essential force to inspire and mobilize us. Already at the beginning of February, the HeK (House of Electronic Arts Basel) was asked by the Chronus Art Center in Shanghai, whose physical presence was already limited at the time by the closure of China, to participate in a joint online exhibition.
With its open call to the international media art community, the Chronus Art Center initiated an online exhibition in response to the current uncertainty and the time of fear. Many international partners have now come together and the HeK is one of them. We are co-organizers of this special online exhibition, which can be seen from 30 March 2020 on arteca.mit.edu by Leonardo https://www.leonardo.info and is also linked via our website http://hek.ch.
