“Archaeologists working in Pompeii have found a collection of ornate jewellery, glass beads and good luck charms which they say give them an insight into 'the female world' of ancient Rome.
“He said the team had discovered a room with ten victims of the eruption, including women and children, in the house and they were trying to establish whether they were a family by using DNA analysis. Osanna said the objects may have belonged to one of the victims found at the site.”
(((Maybe I’m just projecting, but there’s something very alternative-chick about this collection of personal knick-knacks. This isn’t the somber mater-familias, this is stuff a young woman on the make would wear at the beach. Portable mirrors, little look-at-me tinkling ankle bells, a live-fast die-young punk skull or two, some I-might-get-lucky phallic amulets…. Although she lost her wooden box of pretty stuff, I hope she escaped from the red-hot ash-cloud. A lot of people did escape.)))
