*What an interesting item number, from “Thugs of Hindustan.” Here Katrina Kaif, who is a multiethnic British actress currently killing-it in Bollywood, is dancing to entertain an army of British imperialists. Aamir Khan, who plays the movie’s remarkably repulsive lead antihero, has to climb on stage too, but Katrina’s choreography here is so deracinated that it’s otherworldly. It’s like a mash-up of standard nautch-dance moves with parkour and lucha-libre fighting.
I’ve never seen a Bollywood dance as formally eccentric as that one. And it’s rather campy, too, because, although the army of extras aren’t British at all, Katrina actually is.
*This big-budget movie was a box-office failure, but it’s one of Aamir Khan’s most dark and acid political satires — the British imperialists simply step on the necks of the Indians 1790s, because the Indians are sniveling, cringing, murderous Thugs. Except for Katrina here, who is, well, she’s a well-paid collaborationist hooker, basically. However, she can she dance like a woman from a parallel universe.
