FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport?
The Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport is a series of trials and demonstrations, culminating in a congress, designed to showcase the impending transformative impacts of driving automation technology on our businesses and communities across a wide range of use cases—from first-/last-mile connectivity to delivery. By 2030, at least 25% of all trips in Dubai will be automated. (((That'll be interesting.)))
What types of trials and demonstrations will be part of the Challenge?
The Challenge is designed to cover first-/last-mile connection, marine services, delivery services, and innovation. The first use case of the Challenge in 2019 will focus on first-/last-mile connection, that is, taking people the last few miles to and from public transportation services, from parking lots of venues, and shuttle services in communities. The challenge will be divided into multiple categories of participants (i.e. leaders, start-ups, and academia). Participants will have the opportunity to showcase the endurance, reliability, safety, cybersecurity, environmental suitability, and consumer experience of their technologies. (((Or the lack thereof, but, well, that's why it's a "challenge.")))
Who is organizing the Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport?
The challenge is organized and hosted by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The RTA is the government agency responsible for all roads and public transportation in the Emirate of Dubai. Among other activities, the RTA operates the roads and highways, the busses, taxi, metro system, and ferries in Dubai. For more information, please visit www.rta.ae.

The Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport provides a platform for partnership and innovation among global innovators, government, and end users. The Challenge is designed to demonstrate the best solutions to the most salient concerns related to safe and reliable automated driving—whether statutory, economic, or indeed technological. (((I'm surmising that "technological" is the tough part, "economic" is second-toughest, while the "statutory" thing is a piece of cake if you're Dubai.)))
Can you provide us with more details about the congress?
In parallel with the Challenge, RTA will host a congress in October 2019 where international experts, industry leaders, and innovators will come together to recognize the participants of the Challenge, highlight the outcomes, and announce the next steps. The congress will be held every two years to mark Dubai’s commitment to self-driving transport systems.
