Q. Calvino said that Turin crosses logic to arrive at madness.
A. This is a city that has a truly unique energy. Everything gets born in Turin. It's a lab, a city of doing that has managed to also become a city of knowledge. We are not just Fiat. Here, at the Foundation's headquarters, they once produced car wheels. The Merz Foundation was once a Lancia plant, while the OGR repaired trains. Nowadays in these places there is culture. Turin is like that: a city that can search.
Q. Turin is definitely a highlight in the Italian landscape. Like Milan, which is living a golden moment. But I have the feeling that Turin still remains modest at the European level. Is Turin holding up to international comparison?
A. Yes. I think, amid all the criticism of these times, the city has been able to reinvent itself. When I was a little girl, Turin was gray. At 8 pm there was nothing happening, there was no room. Now it's full of energy. For example, there is an academy with students coming from all over the world. We have the Torino Film Festival, which may not be Cannes, but it is a truly experimental festival, in which we will review a selection of art films. There is the Book Salon, which despite all its difficulties has been able to respond. And again: it's no coincidence that Club to Club is here. Not to mention people: here the people are prepared for serious culture. We have a popular, eager audience. Even children are involved, we have 20,000 each year....

È una città che ha un’energia davvero unica. Tutto è nato a Torino. È un laboratorio, una città del fare che è riuscita a diventare anche una città del sapere. Non siamo solamente la Fiat. Qui, nella sede della Fondazione, si producevano cerchioni per le automobili un tempo. La fondazione Merz era uno stabilimento Lancia, alla OGR si riparavano i treni. Ora in questi posti si fa cultura. Torino è così: una città dove si fa ricerca.
È sicuramente un’eccellenza nel panorama italiano. Come Milano, che sta vivendo un momento d’oro. Però io ho la sensazione che restino comunque il fanalino di coda a livello europeo. Torino regge il confronto internazionale?
Sì. Credo che, con tutte le criticità di questi tempi, abbia saputo comunque reinventarsi. Quando io ero bambina era grigia, alle 8 di sera non c’era nulla, non c’era un locale. Ora invece è piena di energia. Ad esempio c’è un’accademia con studenti che arrivano da tutto il mondo. Abbiamo il Torino Film Festival, che non sarà Cannes, ma è un festival davvero sperimentale, all’interno del quale infatti noi cureremo una sezione di film dell’arte. C’è il Salone del Libro, che nonostante tutte le difficoltà ha saputo reagire. E ancora: non è un caso che il Club to Club sia qui. Per non parlare della gente: qui le persone hanno una preparazione, una cultura non casuale. Anche il nostro, è un pubblico formato, ricercato. Persino i bambini vengono coinvolti, solo noi ne ospitiamo 20.000 ogni anno.
