If you could be a writer in any time and place, when and where would it be?
I would be after the laying of the Trans-Siberian and the Indian Railways but sometime before the First World War. I feel that was the moment when you could have seen the most of the world, without dying of some terrible disease, and it all taking decades, but just before the great homogenization of all clothes and cultures had really began. Or maybe I would really rather have been a photographer back then.
