*Tinguely lived a long time, and did well for himself, but an air of unhappiness hangs over his legacy. A morose restlessness, as if maybe he envied the glamorous, headlong smash-up sudden death of Jo Siffert, his Swiss race-car driver best pal. Tinguely didn't want his machines to become pious sculptures up on plinths. He was into the mind-blowing violent moments of the Happening.
