*The Maker Movement has been around long enough that the alpha-geeks here have practically become a caste. They're of course keen on sharing-the-knowledge, but open source is an honor-centric society and those always have elites.

*I'm pretty sure that all creative endeavors generate elites – just some kind of bell-curve phenomenon, it's not a moral failing – but it's interesting that network access, shareable files and code, low barriers-to-entry, ties-in with education, warm 'n' friendly world-is-flat ideological egalitarianism, still can't possibly transform everybody into effective do-it-yourselfers. On the contrary, it's like trying to convince everybody to speak Esperanto because the grammar and spelling are so simple.
