*When I'm in Turin, I commonly walk through this area of the Valentino Park, and there's scarcely a trace of these fantastic riverside structures erected for the Exposition of 1911. They were dreamlike – including the amazing river-crossing cable cars – but they were all lath and plaster and vanished like the dew.
*The cement statues around the fountain are still there, rather the worse for wear but still quite elegant, but one never sees the fountain gush. This may have been the historical high point of Turinese prosperity, for the war to end all wars was on the way.
