At Austin's Circuit of the Americas, drivers were supposed to hit the track this afternoon for the qualifying sessions that determine the starting order of tomorrow's Formula One race. But it's been raining for the past 12 hours, and the conditions are grim.
Qualifying's been delayed four times already but isn't canceled yet, so teams can't go anywhere. The combination of pent up energy, boredom, goofiness, and willingness to entertain the intrepid fans braving the weather has produced some unexpected results.
Mercedes driver and F1 legend Niki Lauda are kicking around a soccer ball. Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz, Jr, the rookies driving for Toro Rosso, are bowling with cans of Red Bull as pins:
Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat started dancing (not too badly) in the rain:
The mechanics of Sauber developed a whole new vehicle—rolling through the pit lane in a small cart and faux-paddling with an improvised oar:
We even saw some break dancing:
And the gents at Williams got ready for a crew race:
We're still waiting for Formula One racing, but as far as entertainment goes, this isn't too shabby.
