Between May 1961 and January 1973, the desperate and deluded hijacked nearly 160 planes in American airspace. This forgotten criminal epidemic is chronicled in The Skies Belong to Us: Love and Terror in the Golden Age of Hijacking, a new book by Wired contributing editor Brendan I. Koerner that comes out today.
Above: During the epidemic’s initial phase, skyjackers were interested solely in obtaining passage to Cuba, which they mistakenly imagined to be a joyous, post-racial paradise. But Fidel Castro had little patience for these American interlopers, most of whom he imprisoned for months or years. Photo: AP
