On most Mondays I pick five posts from the previous week in the geoscience blogosphere that caught my eye. I limit it to just five because I want those who are not already plugged into this community to get a manageable sampling of the awesome stuff out there.
Here's my list for January 2-8, 2012.
- Back in 2010, Ian Stimpson of Hypo-theses posted a photo of a rock for every day of the year, a project he called Rock365. Well, he's doing it again in 2012!
- Ryan Anderson of__* The Martian Chronicles*__ finished his Ph.D. last month and posted his reflections onlessons learned about doing research and thoughts about taking classes and being a teaching assistant. I recommend these posts to all current and future grad students.
- Chris Rowan of Highly Allochthonous used his blog to ask others -- educators and students alike -- their thoughts about the value and limitations of lectures in college-level science education. The result is one of the best comment thread discussions I've seen in a long time, a lot of good stuff there.
- Ian Saginor of Volcanoclast uses an example of particularly awful science reporting to share some ideas about what we can do about it.
- Boo! Looks like Chuck of Lounge of the Lab Lemming is done blogging. Hopefully he'll feel the urge to pick it up again later this year.
Bonus: Check out the new blog here at Wired Science by Samuel Arbesman called Social Dimension. Sam is an applied mathematician and will be discussing how we can use various quantitative analyses to better understanding society and civilization.
