
News International has dominated the press for all of the wrong reasons over the last few weeks. Out of allegations of phone hacking, it emerged that NOTW journalists had accessed voicemails left on the handset owned by the murdered 13-year-old Milly Dowler. This led to a huge hate campaign on Twitter and advertisers abandoning the newspaper. In a bid to cut News International's losses, James Murdoch announced that the News of the World would close down.
[partner id="wireduk"]However, the media and public were not content with the closure of the 168-year-old newspaper and felt that Brooks, who was editor of the News of the World at the time of the alleged hacking, should be held to account. Despite the fact that all 200 current journalists on the newspaper lost their roles, Brooks remained.
Then more allegations emerged about the Sunday Times, which is alleged to have targeted former prime minister Gordon Brown.
This triggered a House of Commons debate about whether Rupert Murdoch was fit for purpose to take over BSkyB and finally culminated in News Corp withdrawing the bid.
