The Webby Awards, probably the only trophy-bestowing organization with a Best Weird category, announced “best of the web” nominations Tuesday that include a shout out to totally addictive time-waster Most Awesomest Thing Ever.
The interactive site invites visitors to choose between two absurdly dissimilar culture bits — for example the Red Dawn movie versus Johnny Cash — then ranks the results. (Teleportation currently sits atop the all-time Most Awesomest popularity chart.)
In the Webbys’ Weird department, Awesomest goes up against What the Fuck Should I Make for Dinner? along with The Daily What, Awkward Family Photos and rathergood.com.
The 15th Annual Webby Awards, recognizing the internet’s best comedians, actors, musicians, bloggers and video makers, will be announced May 3 and passed out June 13.
Other nominees include repeat contender Isabella Rossellini, who dramatizes insects’ sex lives in Sundance Channel’s Green Porno web series. Arcade Fire’s clever interactive The Wilderness Downtown project, which generates imagery for visitors who type in information about their hometowns, snagged a Best Music nod. Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco website got honored in the Best Celebrity category for hyping the bearded funnyman’s national tour.
The mix of finalists ranges from profound to silly — witness CollegeHumor‘s Girls Are Bad At Sound Effects (embedded above). The Best Video Remix/Mashup-nominated clip makes its point with lame vocal grunts synched to Terminator 3 action sequences.
