Documentary short Man & Machine: A Naked Robotic Love Story tells the story of the Belgian musician, who built a robot orchestra controlled by sonar bouncing off the bare skin of a human conductor.
There’s plenty of mechanical music and nude conducting in the trailer, but as the title indicates, this is also a love story: Willem-Raes found the woman of his dreams in Moniek Darge, a performance artist with similar tastes. Darge helped him with the robotic ensemble after a series of “wild inventions including a singing bicycle symphony, an installation in which participants create music by rolling over human-sized pillows of air,” according to the movie’s website.
Man & Machine, co-directed by Jesse Roesler and Jonathan Nowak, makes its world premiere Saturday at the South by Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas. (See Man & Machine screening times.)
