It has pretty much nothing to do with car insurance, but a new TV commercial has everything to do with super-low-budget filmmaking, and it's pretty funny to boot. Auto insurer Geico, of talking lizard fame, launched one of the least-expensive television spots in history last week by making use of Xtranormal's popular text-to-voice animation tool.
The technology translates text messages into CGI-based character vignettes so easily that more than 9 million text-messaged mini-movies have been made using Xtranormal's online service, according to the company.
Geico's TV commercial, embedded above, exploits the characters' affect-free dialogue to droll effect and culminates with a "superpower" display that costs absolutely nothing.
