Morrison in particular treats his writing like anthropology. His detailed, rich universes — particularly his work on Batman, Superman and other books published by DC Comics — seem like living, breathing places, where life goes on even when you’re not reading about it.
Whether that means making a spoiled, entitled 10-year-old into Batman’s new sidekick, or reimagining Superman as a slightly goofy science-fiction messiah, Morrison has a knack for the alchemical conversion of pulp into art.
All of which means that when I talked to him at Comic-Con International last month it was all I could do to keep from melting into a sputtering fanboy. Luckily, Morrison is used to that. The Scottish writer was gracious enough to retell one of his most infamous Comic-Con stories in the video interview above — and to give a quick spoiler for his upcoming Batman team-up series.
