Since 2004, Arcade Fire violinist Owen Pallett has performed solo shows under the name "Final Fantasy." Now, one the eve of his newest album, Heartland, Pallet has decided to retire his videogame-inspired band name.

"I named the band Final Fantasy, as the experience – and the tone of the material – was reminiscent of the hours and hours I had spent as an adolescent playing those epic JRPGs," Pallett wrote in an open letter to fans.

But with his forthcoming record in the can and due for release in Japan, the musician figured it might be a good idea to start heeding the rules of international trademark law. "I feel it is in my own best interests to definitively distinguish my music from Square Enix's games." In the letter, Pallet thanks Square Enix for its "kindness and support."

Future records will be released under the name Owen Pallett. Prior releases under the name Final Fantasy will be repackaged and reissued. Collectors, you know what you've got to do.
