If all goes as planned, gamers will be revisiting the world of Albion in 2010.

During a Microsoft press conference at the German Gamescon Festival, game designer Peter Molyneux revealed that he and his team at Lionhead Studios are working on Fable III . And, as usual, Molyneux intends to continue rethinking the rules of role-playing games.

“I think there’s something fundamentally wrong with RPGs like Fable,” he said. “It’s a mechanic that’s been there since the ’80s. I’m going to take that foundation stone and throw it away.” The new game will find the world of Albion in something similar to the Napoleonic age. Players will take the role of a king and find themselves making decisions that impact their followers.

The game’s new setting will also bring new technologies. “You’ll see new marvels of the industrial age, devices that the people of Albion are amazed by,” game artist John McCormack told Eurogamer.

Molyneux also announced that last year’s Fable II will be rereleased episodically beginning Sept. 29, with the first portion of the game free to play. Watch the first trailer for Fable III, which features voicework by Zoë Wanamaker, below.
