GeekDad HipTrax #32

GeekDad HipTrax

Here at HipTrax, it is our mission to provide geeky music that’s still suitable for the sensitive ears of our brood, but we seldom devolve into what one would call a kid’s music podcast. This episode is no exception, but it did prove an ample opportunity for Ken and me to channel our own inner rugrats. Listen as we wax poetic about Transformers, long lost action figures and the tech that is creating the dorks of tomorrow.

“The Transformers Theme” as covered by John Anealio

John Anealio’s Sci-Fi Songs blog is a veritable treasure trove of nerdy musical goodness. From tracks centered on geek lit standards to musical dedications to sci-fi sirens to uber-dorky covers, John does it all with an ear toward the classic filk tradition, but proves unafraid to experiment with elements as disparate as modern electronica. Give it a listen, and give John some love!

“Chicken Pox & Star Wars Guys” by Marc with a C

Florida’s Marc with a C is also an acoustic guitar-popper, but one with a noticeably different musical slant. If you’re in the greater Orlando area, keep a keen eye out for Marc at your favorite local watering hole. And even if you’re not, check out his site for plenty of downloadable goodness.

“The Children’s Machine (OLPC)” by Dual Core

int eighty and c64, collectively known as Dual Core, are famed for their blend of tech-y lyrics and razor-sharp production, but they also manage to make that unique blend of hip-hop accessible even to those who typically shy away from rap. “The Children’s Machine” is a perfect example of this: an earnest tribute to the power of technology that’s sure to please.
