The Iraqi military -- once built around Warsaw Pact equipment -- has been gradually shifting to U.S./NATO-standard gear: M16 rifles, Humvees, even bomb-resistant armored trucks. But that doesn't mean they can't customize their new kit.
Bids are due tomorrow for Humvee specially modified for Iraqi Special Operations Forces. The Iraqis want a customized version of the vehicle that can accommodate up to six extra personnel and two belt-fed machine guns in the rear cargo area, effectively turning it into a mini-gun truck.
From the solicitation:
It's not unusual to see Iraqi forces riding around in the back of pickup trucks (like this National Police trooper, pictured here). An open-bed truck makes for a quicker dismount, but it still sounds like a more vulnerable ride to me.
