Would you like Guitar Hero and its ilk more if the master tracks were replaced with chiptunes and the graphics were four-color? Then you’re probably D-Pad Hero‘s target audience.
The interesting thing about D-Pad Hero isn’t the concept of scaling down the traditional note-matching music game so it can be played on an NES controller. No, the reason I’m mentioning this is because it’s actually an NES ROM file that you have to play through an emulator like Nestopia. I suppose you could, if you wanted to, burn this to an EEPROM and make your own D-Pad Hero cartridge.
D-Pad Hero has four songs — "Sweet Child O’ Mine," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "The Swing of Things," and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." The gameplay isn’t actually that great, to be honest — it’s got a pretty steep learning curve, and it doesn’t feel particularly good when you hit the right notes. So at this point it’s more of a curiosity.
