Tee hee. A group of ornery lefties are trying to organize an online protest against Bob Gates' re-appointment as Secretary of Defense. Unfortunately for them, no one seems to be heeding their clarion call.
A Facebook group, "1,000,000 Strong Against Keeping Secretary Of Defense Robert Gates," has, as of this writing, exactly 21 members.
A *Daily Kos *diary entry announcing the group's formation points to why attendance might be so low. "Gates is generally seen as a realist," the diarist offers. "Many argue that he has helped stabilize both the Pentagon and the War in Iraq."
The diarist disagrees, of course. Well, kinda-sorta. Actually, what bothers him is that, "If Gates stays on... Obama will count on him for advise [sic] which will invariably be to stay the course in Iraq and double down in
Afghanistan."
Or not. Gates has already said he's looking forward to "accelerating the drawdown" in Iraq. Maybe the protest group can sign some unrepentant neocons up, instead?
