UK scientists have developed a bomb-proof thermometer to study explosions from the inside (without having to kill themselves).
Composed of an optical fibre protected inside a steel tube, the thermometer measures the temperature of an explosive fireball that enters through an exposed end. The UK's National Physics Laboratory led the projectwith hopes to better understand the physics and chemistry of explosions. The thermometer will also be used to refine computer models that predict the sizes of explosions.
