This rather disturbing object is called the Steampunk Gas Mask 9. It marries the compulsory Steampunk materials, leather and brass, with a genuine Soviet-era gas mask. As an object, it is beautiful, and exquisitely crafted. The prop makers on Doctor Who could learn a thing or two from the tinkerer responsible, Bob Basset.
But as apparel? No. This should never, ever be worn, at least not outside the bedroom. As Meredith Scheff writes over at the Steampunk Workshop, "even gimps are getting into the steampunk".
