Build Your Own Mini Music Pub With Idiomag's New Widget

With print magazines entering what might be a long, dark night, digital pubs are on the rise.

U.K.-based personalized music site Idiomag is one of the more interesting entrants, and has recently created a custom widget that nicely loops your chosen videos, reviews and MP3s on your laptop, phone or social net.

I took it for a test run Friday, and was mildly surprised by the limited results at right. It took about two minutes to build: I entered my name, two bands I love, my e-mail address and I was done. Not that it mattered: I chose the Pixies and Swervedriver, but ended up with The Breeders, Dandy Warhols, Weezer and Sonic Youth content instead. I dig all those bands, but it was a bit of a turnoff not to nab my favorites in the video and review sections.

This widget is rather cool, especially if you’ve got a user name from Last.fm, MySpace, Pandora, iLike and other social networking sites you feel like sharing. I didn’t, deciding to go in cold to see what came up. I imagine the results would have been more satisfactory if I did share my user name, but I wanted to see what a new adopter would end up with. Not bad, altogether.

Idiomag is taking comments and suggestions on the new widget, so take it for a drive yourself and let the site’s operators know what you think. With products like these, you’ll never have to read Spin again.
