This year’s Coachella is shaping up to be…what’s the word? Weird. That’s it. Weird.
Without an icon on hand in the form of My Bloody Valentine, the desert party has turned funk for one: Prince headlines the Saturday lineup, as of the latest reports.
That’s not good news for MySpacers sharing the festival’s stages who have little in the way of chops. Prince Rogers Nelson is one of the most dynamic and explosive performers in music history. Until Jimi Hendrix comes back from the dead, he’s probably the sickest guitar player alive. The extended solo on the end this 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rendition of George Harrison’s "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" ought to illustrate that point nicely.
But he’s a perfect fit for a festival that could use always a little more flavor. His addition makes Saturday’s bizarro lineup truly eclectic. On that day alone, attendees will be hopscotching from Islands to Stephen Malkmus to Hot Chip to Death Cab for Cutie to Kraftwerk to Portishead.
Prince is one hell of a sonic chaser after that hard’s day night.
