Geekdad gamers will doubtless be pleased to hear that EA has finally set a release date for Spore, the long-awaited project from SimCity genius Will Wright -- September 7. The press release does not, however, specify a year, so presumably we could still be in for a long wait.

Spore gives players their own personal universe in a box. Create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt entire worlds and explore a universe created by other gamers. Spore gives players a wealth of creative tools to customize nearly every aspect of their universe: creatures, vehicles, buildings, and even UFOs. Players can then seamlessly share their creations with the world or explore infinite new galaxies created by other gamers.

They've also thoughtfully provided a page of screenshots and teaser movies. This is one game I'll definitely be picking up new, instead of engaging in my usual "wait until a used copy drops to half of new retail" strategy!
