Because there remain among us automotive enthusiasts who don't yet (and may never) share the sentiments of the EPA's Margo Oge, who demanded automakers bring an end to the horsepower arms race, Florida-based aftermarket tuner RENNtech presents its Stage 3 package for the Mercedes-Benz "65-series" AMG models, including the $194,825 S65 AMG, the $188,025 SL65 AMG, and the $198,325 CL65 AMG, pictured here. Starting with the cars' twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 engine (which in showroom trim produces 604 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque), RENNtech introduced software revisions and a host of airflow enhancements that bump the output to 695 horsepower and 890 pound-feet of torque. Moreover, the company claims that its tinkering has improved fuel economy (the standard cars return between 11 and 13 mpg in the city and between 17 and 20 mpg on the highway) and cut noxious tailpipe emissions. The cost of such excess: $18,990, plus labor.
