Second Life's appearance on the NBC comedy The Office has made the list of the 10 most effective product placements of 2007, earning the number 8 slot.
The show's Oct. 25 episode saw beet farmer Dwight Schrute joining the virtual world to "calculate the exchange rate between Schrute bucks and linden dollars."
The list, compiled by the Hollywood Reporter, attempts to show how television and film have influenced the public perception of a product. Second Life's placement on the list seems to indicate that its proximity to Steve Carell gave the average person a reason to explore the fictional realm (that doesn't stem from his or her curiosity regarding sexy, anthropomorphic foxes) despite the show's lampooning of its subject matter.
Then again, that horrid CSI: NYepisode centering on Second Life probably drove thousands away from the game, so they should be happy to break even.
