Linux fans, are you jealous of the Mac app Quicksilver? Sure there's Katapult for KDE, but what about Gnome? Gnome Do is what you've been looking for. The app looks and functions more or less like Quicksilver, Katapult, Launchy (Windows) and other "launchers," and of course its free.
Application launcher really doesn't begin to cover what Quicksilver and its ilk are capable of and while none of these other variants truly match Quicksilver, Gnome Do does a pretty good job and there's an add-on framework should you decide to create your own functionality.
Out of the box Gnome Do has access to your applications, favorites, system config panels, and Firefox bookmarks. There are also some add-ons which can bring in music playing capabilities, IM contact lists and Evolution e-mails, among other things.
Installation instructions can be found on the download page (there's a package or you can build from source).
Gnome Do is a work in progress, and the site claims that it could be unstable, but I didn't encounter any problems in my testing.
