The technology behind the wind-up radios proliferating across Africa could shine some light in the more remote corners of the continent. The Freeplay Foundation is developing a wind-up recharging station that could be used to juice up several detachable lights.

Kristine Pearson, director of the Freeplay Foundation, says the lights could buy a lot of extra productivity in areas with limited or no access to electricity:

Their life stops or is very narrowed when the sun goes down...Two extra hours of light would make a big difference to their life.
