Veteran Sony weenies are still scratching their heads over the company's decision to add support for DivX video to the PlayStation 3. What does Sony gain by promoting a format it doesn't own?
One theory is that this is Sony's way to counter the exclusive-content battle being waged in the Blu-ray vs. HD DVD war. Sure, you still won't be able to view Universal, Paramount of Dreamworks discs in their original HD DVD form. But you could get a "friend" (nudge nudge, wink wink) to burn a "backup copy" (Know what I mean? Know what I mean?) in DivX. Normally, I'd think such Faustian brilliance was beyond Sony, but these are desperate times.
