
Microsoft has advanced another step with its noble effort to replace the proprietary, exclusionary mess that is the RAW format with some standardized sanity. The Joint Photographic Experts Group, the folks behind the JPEG format, has approved Redmond's request to rename its HD Photo format to JPEG XR (for "extended range").
Now all Microsoft has to do is convince anyone besides Adobe -- a camera maker or two would be nice -- to adopt the format.
