How To Build Your Own Hybrid Hydrogen-Electrical Engine

Mark Miller, maker of extraordinary articulated robots, has crafted a new engine prototype that runs on hydrogen and electricity, transitions smoothly between electrical and fossil power, and is, he claims, very efficient. Best of all, you can build one yourself from cheap, commonplace components.

"I wanted to build a hydrogen fueled engine but knew that a tank of hydrogen was not in my budget, so I made my own using some calcium hydride in a small valved container. When you add a little water to these it produces hydrogen on demand. ... Nice and safe too!"

That final claim notwithstanding, if your shed, basement or head achievies escape velocity when you try and make one of these, you've only got yourself to blame.
