Today marks the official launch of Ubuntu 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon" which packs in a number of improvements and new features. For a detailed look at what's new, check out my review on the main Wired site.
While getting Ubuntu running on your PC is about as easy as you can imagine, it's always nice to know that your hardware officially supports your operating system. To that end, Dell says that it will soon begin offering PCs with Gutsy Gibbon pre-installed.
A post on the Direct2Dell blog says that the company has been working closely with the Ubuntu team to ensure complete hardware compatibility.
There's a new wiki page up for Dell customers which will track the company's Gutsy Gibbon progress and will eventually list release dates for new hardware with Gutsy pre-installed. In the mean time, having installed Ubuntu on both a Toshiba and a Mac, I'm happy to say that, even without formal hardware support, everything just worked straight out of the box.
You can grab the latest version of Ubuntu from the site and naturally Kubuntu 7.10, Edubuntu 7.10 and the rest of the Ubuntu variants are also available.
