In the latest turn, a high-level official at the Department of Transportation sent a letter saying that the federal government does not support a port solution that would require harbor trucks to purchase and maintain new, low-emissions vehicles. Why? It may disrupt shipping traffic.

Sent by U.S. Maritime Administrator Sean Connaughton, the letter received immediate support from shippers, retailers and truckers, who are worried about the costs that clean trucks would add to the entire delivery chain. A bigger worry is that truckers would unionize as a result of the plan. A question citizens should ask: Why is the DOT intervening in local matter?
