As noted in our brethren blogs, Apple has finally chomped into the greasy Bratwurst of Reality and announced plans to support development of third-party applications for the iPhone. The SDK, which will also enable iPod Touch apps, won't be available until February, however, because of the same excuses you've heard a million times. Sayeth Lord Jobs:

We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs. We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.

Main challenge now will be to hope hackers leave some interesting needs unmet by the time the official tools come out.
