New York's single trip MetroCard is $2, a single ticket on the Paris Metro costs €1.50 (2.11 USD), London's single journey paper tickets are £4 (8.08 USD), and Beijing's current single journey tickets are 3 yuan, or 40 US cents. And that last price may be lowered to 2 yuan (27 US cents) if the meeting goes well. Beijing's municipal transportation administration will be discussing, on 26 September, possible fare decreases as the rest of the world's transit agencies are reluctantly raising fares. Beijing Subway will discuss two possible options of fare pricing: flat rate tickets for 2 yuan, or 2 to 4 yuan tickets depending on the distance traveled. The main goal of lowering the ticket prices is to encourage more car users to take public transit. Because of the rising housing prices, Beijing residents seem to be excited about the price reductions. Traffic has become a major problem in Beijing as more of China's middle class opts for automobiles instead of bicycles and public transit. China's capital currently runs four subway lines and several lines are under construction in preparation for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. A noticeable aspect of the subway system is that Beijing still manually checks for tickets at platform entrances, instead of having turnstiles do all the work.
