While geeks take expensive gadgets like the iPhone apart in order to increase their capabilities, a group of cheapskates are doing the same to flat pack designs from Ikea.

The New York Times reports on a group of individuals who look at an Ikea Billy bookcase or Lack table and see "not a finished object but raw material: a clean palette yearning to be embellished or repurposed.”

One of the gems from the piece is Ikea Hacker, a blog forum for people who want to show their creativity when it comes to manipulating Scandinavian mass design. Some of the hacks are way impressive like the instructions on how to use Ikea goods to make a light tent to photograph small objects in.
