Several factors have brought down costs. First came fractional ownership, in which companies sell a share of an airplane. Then came jet card programs, which are much like gift cards for Starbucks. As little as $44,000 would buy you 10 hours of time on a six-passenger jet. Now there are charter brokers which allow you to hire planes for a single trip, no prepurchase necessary. For anywhere between $8,000 and $20,000, you can fly six people from New York to Florida, depending on whether the charter company can book a return trip (otherwise, you pay for it). The convenience isn't just about traveling on your own timetable. Private jets can often fly into airports that are much closer to your ultimate destination. The "Wall Street Journal's" Scott McCartney looks at the growing number of people who are using private jets.
