Changing the rule book in the middle of the season is unseemly--and a little unsportsmanlike. But this is exactly what the IMSA, sanctioning body for the America Le Mans series, did to the two Penske Porsches, robbing the cars of about 5 percent of their horsepower. Why the change? Though the Porsches race in a class behind the V10 turbo-diesel Audis, they kept cleaning their clocks, taking three straight victories. The rule change went into effect at last week's race at Lime Rock and yet a Porsche still won. Admittedly, Lime Rock is one of the hardest tracks for the Audis, yet it remains to be seen whether a five-percent cut in power is sufficient to hold the Porsches back.
