Got some old gadgets lying around? If you're planning to harm the environment with these by getting rid of them improperly, at least make a quick buck out of it. Instead of chucking it in the trash, melt it down: a pound of copper is worth $3.57 this morning. That's enough to get more than $2 for a melted-down dollar's worth of pre-1982 pennies.
There's probably some way to set up a smelter in your back yard with bricks and a steel drum, providing an easy way to deliver complex carbon compounds to the atmosphere in return for the 80 cents worth of copper in a CRT or old computer. If you know that way, knock yourself out (with fumes.) Alternatively, one may just steal some wire from Verizon.
